Black and white photo filter

Dorr’s Noir filter turns a photo black and white and deepens the contrast. At 100% all color is gone; lower strengths keep a little of the original color for a muted look. Apply it free in the web editor and save a PNG, with no sign-up.

What changes at 35, 70 and 100%

At 100% the sample has no color left and its contrast rises by about 33%, so bright and dark areas separate more clearly. At 70% saturation is about 49% lower than the original and contrast about 23% higher, leaving a hint of teal in the sea. At 35% saturation drops by only about 21%, like a faded color photo.

On architecture with strong color

The orange facade and blue sky become clean grays, and contrast rises by about 29% at 100%. Without color competing for attention, the curves and lines of the structure lead the eye. Black and white works well when color distracts from shape.

GOOD TO KNOW

Frequently asked questions

Is Noir free?

Yes. Noir is not a Pro item, so you can preview and save it free in the web editor and in the iPhone and Android app.

What is the difference between Noir and Mono?

Noir removes color and raises contrast (about +33% at 100% on the sample), so it looks crisp and dramatic. Mono also removes most of the color (about 63% less saturation at 70%) but keeps the original contrast, so it looks softer and grayer.

Does the app use the same Noir?

Yes. The web editor uses the same Noir as the Dorr app. In the app you can also add text, correct perspective and undo steps, and Dorr Pro saves in HD.
